Teams gather for the 11th annual Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival held for the first time at Wendy Park on Lake Erie. Early signs indicated that paddling would be difficult as the waves on the lake were a bit choppy.
Opening ceremonies began with team introductions followed by Ven. Shih Ying-Fa, Abbot of Cloudwater Zendo performing the traditional painting the eyes & blessing of the boats.

At the start of the second round the wind picked up and became a matter of concern. The Heartland Community Church team capsized and are pictured here returning to the dock as one of their paddlers bends to kiss the ground. The decision was made to postpone racing until the winds subsided. During the delay, Dave Rolf of the Cleveland Dragons and Pat Lorch of the Emerald Dragons talk to Dynamic Dragon Boat Racing & Dragonboat USA race officials.
The Yume Daiko Taiko drumming team provided entertainment during the break. Then as racing resumed, teams waited for race commands at the starting point on the east end of Wendy Park.
The Dragon Slayers paddle to the starting point and the Cleveland Dragons finish their second race.
The Cleveland Dragons take 3rd place and receive their medals at the 2017 Cleveland Dragon Boat festival.
Oona, drummer for the Spinning Dragons, gets a lift from Michael Ciccarello as the team celebrates their 2nd place finish.
